Culturally adapted dietary approaches to CVRM in primary care: practical strategies for diverse patient populations
People from South Asian and Black African and Caribbean communities are at higher cardiovascular, renal and metabolic (CVRM) risk, with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease often developing earlier and at a lower BMI. Yet most dietary advice for CVRM in primary care is built around a Western plate, and advice that doesn't fit how someone eats rarely gets followed.
This session shows how to adapt the T-shaped plate model to support CVRM management across the main cultural diets in the UK, including Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Black African and Caribbean. It gives a quick overview of the foods most commonly eaten in each, where the carbohydrates and calories tend to come from, and how to give simple, respectful advice that helps reduce CVRM risk.
