Diabetes nurse to spotlight role of injection technique at CVRM Professional Care
Injection Technique Matters (ITM) will be a key focus at a session at the inaugural CVRM Professional Care conference, with delegates set to explore practical approaches to improving outcomes for people living with diabetes.
Leading the discussion will be Erica Richardson, Lead Diabetes Research Nurse and Nurse Lecturer at the University Hospital of Leicester, who will share insights into the vital role injection technique plays in the safe and effective use of injectable therapies.
Drawing on her extensive clinical and research experience, Erica will highlight how small changes in technique can make a significant difference to treatment success, patient confidence and long-term diabetes management.
The session will explore why injection technique is far more than a practical skill, examining the significant impact it can have on treatment effectiveness, glycaemic management and overall health outcomes.
Delegates will gain practical insights into assessing and supporting people who use injectable therapies, alongside guidance on educational resources that can help reinforce best practice in everyday care.
Erica will also discuss key considerations including insulin absorption, glycaemic trends, Current guidance relating to appropriate choice of injection sites and needle length, device training, challenges around body shape and image and lipohypertrophy – a common but often overlooked complication associated with repeated injections.
Alongside these practical elements, Erica will showcase research and scientific findings that demonstrate the wider implications of injection technique and its relevance to CVRM health.
“With so many injectable therapies available to help people living with diabetes to manage their diabetes, it is important that healthcare professionals are aware the importance of correct use, administration and possible complications associated with using them,” said Erica.
She added: “Healthcare professionals should be confident and competent in the identification of possible complications, assessment and need for ongoing educational support and development.”
Reflecting on the importance of integrated CVRM care, Erica said: “Managing complex conditions in silos is difficult so it is really important to pull everything together to foster an environment that supports more holistic care.”
The session ‘Injectable therapies and the importance of correct injection technique’ will take place at CVRM Professional Care on October 21, from 9.15am to 9.45am – hosted by Erica Richardson (Lead Diabetes Research Nurse and Nurse Lecturer at the University Hospital of Leicester).
